What The Role Is

The Protection and Controls (P&C) Engineer will provide subject matter expertise on Clearway renewable energy projects (design protection schemes, provide setting calculations, configure SEL devices, perform power systems studies, etc.)

What You'll Be Doing

Generation Fleet Support

  • Support wind and solar fleet throughout the US in areas of high voltage maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Apply knowledge of protection schemes and philosophies commonly applied to distribution substations
  • Conduct and review power system calculations, including short circuit calculation, current transformer performance, and ratio selection, over-current element coordination, zone-distance element selection, and coordination, and relay loads calculations
  • Single point of failure analysis and risk assessment
  • Maintain files for site equipment, nameplate data, and relevant pictures of substation equipment
  • Assist O&M team with remote troubleshooting, sometimes on nights and weekends
  • Diagnose faults using protective relaying tools, such as SEL Quickset, AcSELerator, SEL Synchrowave, GE EnerVista
  • Support the Electrical Engineering team more generally, to solve complex problems associated with renewable energy equipment

Plant NERC and ISO Support

  • NERC support for the compliance group, utility solar plants and wind farms, and the plant operations center
  • Analyze electrical fault reports and events verifying proper protective relay performance per PRC-004
  • Consult and review equipment testing results and reports from contractors following substation outages
  • Provide NERC technical evaluations or engineering reviews required for sites to comply with local standards, such as CAISO and ERCOT
  • Protection System Maintenance Plan reviews and updates
What You'll Bring
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related degree
  • Hands-on experience in testing equipment using Doble, OMICRON, RTDS, and similar devices
  • Familiarity with substation automation and communication with IT and OT network communication protocols (including TCP/IP, UDP, DNP3, and IEC 61850)
  • Experience in configuring multiple vendors relay or RTU such as SEL, GE, SIEMENS
  • Capable of managing small projects or tasks on a larger scale project and ability to mentor lesser experienced technicians
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate both internally and externally
  • Experience with protective relaying tools, such as SEL Quickset, AcSELerator, SEL Synchrowave, GE EnerVista
  • Must understand electrical power generation and distribution
  • Must be familiar with relay coordination and protection schemes
  • Must be familiar with short circuit and arc flash analysis
  • Must be knowledgeable with reactive power and load flow analysis
  • Must be familiar with ground grid design and purpose
  • Must be able to read and interpret electrical drawings, technical manuals, and test reports
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E and Arc Flash hazards
  • Knowledge of proper use of PPE, grounding equipment and switching equipment
  • Knowledge of protective relay purpose, operation, fault analysis and event reporting
  • Knowledge of thermography - use, training, reporting and analysis
  • Knowledge of MV/HV breakers and disconnect operation, maintenance, and testing
  • Knowledge of at least one (1) software tool, e.g., SKM, ETAP, PSSe, PSCAD, ASPEN for electrical design, power flow, short circuit, and transient analysis

What Would Be Nice

Experience & Education

  • Experience with ETAP is preferred
  • A minimum of three years of relevant in the power generation, transmission, or distribution sectors is preferred

The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training and certifications, and other factors permitted by law. This role is eligible to earn an annual cash bonus, subject to personal and company performance goals.

Salary Range Across all U.S. Locations
$90,000$130,000 USD
