Ameresco is currently seeking a Senior Controls Engineer with an emphasis on development and integration of interoperable and intelligent building controls to support smart building initiatives in energy savings performance contracting projects, new technology applications, and renewable energy initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Survey and analyze existing standalone and networked facility control systems to identify:

    • Deficiencies in operational integrity, maintainability & product life, condition, and cybersecurity.

    • Strategic opportunities for software, hardware or programming upgrades in support of reduced energy or water costs and/or usage, and for improved cybersecurity.

    • Beneficial integration of current proprietary control hardware and software for improved interoperability.

    • Potential integration of systems with diverse functionality (e.g. lighting controls, chiller/boiler plant controls, metering systems) to enable facility or site-scale objectives (e.g. electrical demand control, predictive maintenance, energy use disaggregation).

    • Options to leverage functional and secure application of the internet of things (IoT) for enhanced control and monitoring initiatives.

    • Transition of proprietary systems to modern open-protocol platforms.

    • Enhancements to user interface including improved trending, alarming, visualization, and public displays or dashboards.

    • Continuous commissioning and fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) improvements, and artificial intelligence (AI) based optimization of control sequences.

  • Support energy analysis by configuring trends and reports and retrieving baseline system data pertaining to controlled mechanical energy consuming or distributing systems and validating accuracy of same.

  • Prepare bid and construction scope narratives, drawings, specifications in support of construction, operations, and maintenance of customer site programs and projects in accordance with energy savings performance contract requirements.

  • Review shop drawings and vendor sequences and programming for conformance with project requirements.

  • Coordinate with vendors and installation contractors for feasibility and pricing verification of proposed project modifications.

  • Provide engineering guidance throughout project development, construction, project commissioning, and operations.

  • Distribute useful knowledge regarding industry trends and best practices regarding control system analysis to internal peers through formal training events as well as regular informal collaboration.

  • Support the inclusion of measurement and verification (M&V) features in controls scopes where appropriate to automate M&V tasks consistent with contract requirements.

  • Cultivate and maintain effective business relationships at all levels and project phases.

  • Comply with company, industry, trade,and jurisdictionalsafety standards, practices, codes.

  • Ensure project implementation meets or exceeds project, customer, and company objectives, financial parameters, and technical needs required to deliver contractual energy cost savings.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum 8 years of experience with control systems.

  • Ability to review confidential US security information.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in energy-conserving and cost-reducing control strategies including temperature and pressure resets, variable flow air and water system control, scheduling, demand-controlled ventilation and economizer controls preferred.

  • Familiarity with common Federal Agency specifications and requirements for HVAC control systems, including requirements from DOD - all services, DOE, BOP, GSA, DOI preferred.

  • Familiarity with Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC) contract requirements and workflow preferred.

  • Familiarity with current and legacy control systems from major vendors including but not limited to JCI, TAC/Schneider, Siemens, Honeywell, Distech, and Automated Logic preferred.

  • Direct experience with communications protocols including BACnet, Lonworks, Modbus, XML preferred.

  • Familiarity or experience with industrial PLC-based control platforms desired preferred.

  • Proficiency Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Proven ability to manage and complete complex projects in a timely, cost-effective manner.

  • Strong verbal, written, computer communication and technical presentation skills.

  • Ability to travel as required.
