Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

As a Temporary Elections Worker, you would assist in facilitating the election process. This would be through performing data entry, processing ballots, and/or making deliveries.

Please see the Essential Job Tasks section below for a complete list of positions. All listed positions are temporary employee roles with Maricopa County before, during, and after the election cycle. The placement and assignment of each temporary election worker are based on facilitation needs and the applicant's abilities.

NOTE: This recruitment will be used to fill multiple temporary positions.

We Require

This position requires a High School Diploma or GED.

Successful candidates must be registered voters or have the ability to become a registered voter in the State of Arizona. You must pass an applicable background screening. A valid Arizona Driver's License is required, and some positions may require the use of a County or personal vehicle, which would require a valid driver's license, current auto insurance, a reliable vehicle, and attendance in Maricopa County's Defensive Driving Course. You must be able to work overtime as necessary.

Job Contributions

Temporary Ballot Processor

  • Works in a team of two with a partner of a different political party
  • Opens, verifies, counts, and stacks ballots for delivery to the Ballot Tabulation Center
  • Pays attention to detail when opening envelopes to identify discrepancies with the envelope and/or ballot, and documents information about each batch for auditing purposes
  • Follows precise and specific instructions for a dedicated step-by-step workflow
  • Assists other divisions with election activities

Temporary Ballot Processing Room Attendant

  • Coordinates the flow of ballot trays to teams
  • Transports racks on wheels loaded with ballot trays throughout the building
  • Lifts and removes ballot trays to and from the ballot racks to distribute and retrieve from teams
  • Requires attention to detail when confirming processed trays are properly completed
  • Makes postal runs to the United States Postal Services, picks up printed items from Runbeck Elections, and drops off ballots for scanning to initiate the signature verification process
  • Assists Mail Clerks with opening duties as described below
  • Assists other divisions with election activities

Temporary Mail Courier

  • Utilizes electronic mail opening machinery to open ballots in bulk prior to ballot processing
  • Position will require long periods of standing while utilizing electronic mail-opening machinery
  • Must be able to push/pull 200-300-pound ballot crates into ballot processing staging area or secured ballot vault
  • Assists other divisions with election activities

Working Conditions

  • Full-time/Temporary/Overtime hours is mandatory during the election cycle
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Upper extremity repetitive motion
  • Ability to review small font on hard copy or computer screen
  • Ability to lift floor-to-shoulder and shoulder-to-waist a minimum of 25 pounds and carry for 100 feet
  • Ability to push/pull a minimum of 50 pounds for 200 feet
  • Utilize personal or County vehicle
